The Ospedaletto, Baroque façade and memory of an orphanage

In the Castello sestiere, on Barbaria de le Tole and a stone's throw from the Rio dei Mendicanti, the church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, universally known as the Ospedaletto, belonged to a vast charitable institution founded in 1527-1528, during a severe famine that drove many destitute people from the Terraferma to Venice. Linked to the work of Saint Jerome Emiliani, or Girolamo Miani, the institution took in the sick, the poor, and orphans of both sexes. It became one of the four great Ospedali of Venice, those welfare institutions that also acquired a remarkable reputation in the field of music education.

The church was built from 1575, according to a design traditionally attributed to Andrea Palladio. It was profoundly embellished in the 17th century thanks to the legacy of the wealthy merchant Bartolomeo Cargnoni. From 1670, Baldassare Longhena, the architect of Santa Maria della Salute, worked mainly on the high altar and designed the extraordinary Baroque façade. Its profusion of reliefs, masks, and sculpted figures is unusual in Venice. The four powerful telamons that seem to support the entablature, as well as several other sculptures, are attributed to Giusto Le Court, one of Longhena's principal collaborators.

The interior, with a single nave, preserves a collection of works accumulated over the centuries, notably by Palma il Giovane, Carl Loth, Pietro Liberi, and Giambattista Tiepolo. The latter worked there very young: several figures of apostles painted around 1715-1716 and the Sacrifice of Isaac, executed a few years later, are among the testimonies of his early Venetian career. Above the high altar is also the organ built in 1751 by Pietro Nacchini, an important vestige of the institution's musical tradition.

The complex is not limited to the church. The 17th-century transformations left an elegant oval staircase by Giuseppe Sardi and the courtyard known as the Four Seasons, redesigned under Longhena and formerly intended for the institution's residents. These spaces remind us that the Ospedaletto was a veritable small charitable city, not a simple orphanage attached to a church.

The Ospedaletto belonged to the network of the four great Venetian charitable institutions — with the Pietà, the Mendicanti, and the Incurabili — which combined assistance to the most vulnerable, education, and musical practice. The proximity of the former Ospedale dei Mendicanti, in the area of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and the Rio dei Mendicanti, highlights the exceptional concentration of large hospital and charitable institutions in this part of Castello.
