Bridge of Sighs, passage between the Doge's Palace and the prisons

The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) spans the rio di Palazzo, behind the Doge's Palace, and connects it to the Prigioni Nuove, the “new prisons” built on the other side of the canal. Built in 1614 on a design attributed to the architect Antonio Contin, it allowed prisoners and detainees to move directly between the palace's courtrooms and the prison areas. Despite its modest dimensions, with a length of about eleven meters, it has become one of the most instantly recognizable monuments in Venice.

Entirely enclosed and built of Istrian stone, the bridge is pierced by small openings protected by stone grilles that only reveal fragments of the outside landscape. Its interior is divided by a wall into two parallel corridors. One connected the prisons to the rooms of the Magistrato alle Leggi and the Quarantia Criminal, the other to the rooms of the Avogaria and the Parlatorio; both also communicated with the service staircase linking the Pozzi, the palace's lower cells, to the Piombi, located under the roofs.

Outside, its architecture contrasts with the austerity of its function. The light stone, the pilasters, the volutes, and the sculpted decoration herald the Baroque taste of the 17th century. In the center appears the coat of arms of Doge Marino Grimani, beneath a representation of Justice, reminding us that the bridge belonged above all to the judicial system of the Republic of Venice.

The most famous viewpoint is on the Ponte della Paglia (Straw Bridge), along the Riva degli Schiavoni, just a few steps from St Mark's Square. It is from here that the bridge appears framed between the Doge's Palace and the Prigioni Nuove. It can also be observed from the Ponte della Canonica, on the other side, or from a gondola passing under its arch. A much more recent tourist legend also claims that lovers who kiss under the bridge at sunset are assured eternal love: a romantic story unrelated to its original prison function.

To actually cross the bridge, you must follow the tour route of the Doge's Palace, which leads from the old judicial chambers to the Prigioni Nuove. From inside, the narrow openings still allow a glimpse of the lagoon and San Giorgio Maggiore. This very limited view helps to understand how a simple functional passage between courtroom and prison could have given rise to one of the most enduring legends of Venice.

Visiting tips

The bridge has no independent access from the street: crossing it is only possible as part of a visit to the Doge's Palace and its prisons. To view it from the outside, the Ponte della Paglia remains the classic lookout but also the busiest. The Ponte della Canonica offers a different and often less sought-after perspective. For photographs from the Riva degli Schiavoni, early morning generally allows for lighter crowds.
