Facing St. Mark's Square, San Giorgio Maggiore offers one of the most beautiful reverse-angle views of Venice. Visitors come for Palladio's basilica, Tintoretto's paintings, and especially for the view from the bell tower. The former Benedictine buildings, now occupied by the Giorgio Cini Foundation, also host gardens and exhibitions. A short, quiet visit, particularly rich in perspectives.
San Giorgio Maggiore, the island facing St. Mark's Square
Situated at the entrance to the St. Mark's Basin, opposite the Doge's Palace and the Piazzetta, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore forms one of the most famous panoramas of Venice. Small in size, it nevertheless brings together a major monumental complex, dominated by the white facade of its basilica and its brick bell tower.
Already frequented in antiquity, the island took its current name after the construction of an early church dedicated to Saint George in the 9th century. In 982, Doge Tribuno Memmo entrusted it to the monk Giovanni Morosini, who founded a Benedictine monastery destined to play an important religious and cultural role in the Republic of Venice.
The present basilica was designed in the 16th century by Andrea Palladio and completed after his death in 1610. Its classical facade, its vast luminous volumes, and its position at the water's edge make it one of the architect's most accomplished works. The interior notably preserves several large paintings by Tintoretto, including The Last Supper and The Gathering of the Manna.
The bell tower, rebuilt in the 18th century, rises to about 75 meters. Its summit offers a particularly wide view over the St. Mark's Basin, the Giudecca, the domes of Venice, and the lagoon, often more unobstructed than that of St. Mark's bell tower.
The former monastic buildings have housed the Giorgio Cini Foundation since 1951, created to restore the complex and make it an international center dedicated to culture, research, and the arts. Cloisters, libraries, exhibition spaces, gardens, and contemporary installations now occupy a large part of the island.
