Santa Croce District Sestiere

Santa Croce, between the gateway to Venice and ancient districts

Located in the northwestern part of Venice, Santa Croce is one of the smallest sestieri in the city. It presents a particularly sharp contrast between its western fringe, marked by road access, and its ancient districts, organized around small canals, peaceful squares, and palaces overlooking the Grand Canal.

Today, Piazzale Roma is Venice's main road terminus. Buses, cars, and taxis drop off a large number of visitors every day, who often cross Santa Croce without really looking at it. Yet a few minutes are enough to leave the busiest routes and find a quieter Venice, still largely residential.

The district also boasts a remarkable façade on the Grand Canal. Baroque churches, former merchant warehouses, and patrician residences recall that Santa Croce was long an active area of Venetian commerce, as well as a residence for several great families of the Republic.

Key places to visit

1. Ca' Pesaro is one of Baldassare Longhena's great Baroque masterpieces. Its powerful stone facade now houses the International Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Oriental Art.
2. San Stae opens its Baroque facade directly onto the Grand Canal. Behind this elegant composition from 1709 lies a major collection of 18th-century Venetian paintings, with works by Tiepolo, Piazzetta, and Sebastiano Ricci in particular.
3. The Fontego dei Turchi, built in the 13th century, served from 1621 as a residence, warehouse, and trading place for Ottoman merchants. It even included a prayer hall and a space reserved for ritual bathing. Heavily restored in the 19th century, it now houses the Natural History Museum.
4. Campo San Giacomo dall'Orio is one of the most pleasant spaces in the district, frequented by locals and surrounded by houses, cafés, and small shops. Its atmosphere contrasts sharply with the nearby major tourist routes.
5. The church of San Giacomo dall'Orio, founded according to tradition in the 9th century, is among the oldest in Venice. Its irregular interior is dominated by a remarkable wooden ceiling shaped like a ship's keel and houses works by Lorenzo Lotto, Palma Giovane, and Veronese.
6. Palazzo Mocenigo lets you discover the apartments of a patrician family from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its collections are dedicated to textiles, historical costumes, and the history of perfume in Venice.
7. San Simeon Piccolo, facing Santa Lucia station, is immediately recognizable by its large green dome dominating the Grand Canal. Rebuilt in the 18th century, the church is distinguished by its centrally planned layout and its classical portico facade, giving it a highly unusual silhouette in the Venetian landscape.
8. The Tolentini, or the church of San Nicola da Tolentino, form one of the monumental religious complexes in western Venice. Their vast facade preceded by an imposing classical portico contrasts with the more medieval architecture of the district.
9. Other places to discover: San Zan Degolà and the Papadopoli Gardens. The small church of San Zan Degolà retains the ancient character of a building of medieval origin, while the Papadopoli Gardens offer one of the few true wooded spaces in the historic city.
