Papadopoli Gardens, a green pause in Santa Croce

The Papadopoli Gardens are located near Piazzale Roma, in the part of Santa Croce closest to the land arrival points. Their presence is precious in a historic city where public green spaces remain rare. Protected by large trees, they offer a welcome transition between the bustle of the road terminal and the old districts of Venice.

They occupy part of the area where the church of Santa Croce, which gave its name to the sestiere, and its convent once stood. After the suppression of the monastery in the early 19th century, the land was acquired by the Papadopoli family. The garden was laid out in 1834 at the initiative of Teresa Mosconi, wife of Count Spiridione Papadopoli, based on a design by the architect and scenographer Francesco Bagnara.

Bagnara notably designed, on the Grand Canal side, a landscaped garden inspired by the romantic taste of the era, with winding paths and gentle reliefs. Enlarged and redesigned in 1863, the ensemble once included exotic plants, an aviary, and a terrace overlooking the Grand Canal.

The garden was drastically reduced in 1933 during the development of Piazzale Roma and the digging of the Rio Novo. Despite these changes, it retains a genuine breathing function: trees, shaded paths, and small rest areas contrast with the nearby quays, bridges, and flows of travelers.

The visit is short. People come here mainly to take a break in the shade, observe the transition between the car-oriented city and the pedestrian city, or begin to slow down before reaching the older campi of Santa Croce, especially that of San Giacomo dall'Orio.

The Papadopoli Gardens finally remind us that Venice is not only made of stone and water. Even modest, its green spaces tell of the city's modern transformations, but also the very ordinary needs of its residents and visitors.
