San Pantalon Church Church
Church with an unfinished facade housing one of the world's largest painted ceilings, a spectacular work by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani.
San Pantalon, the Largest Painted Ceiling in Venice
On the border between the sestieri of Dorsoduro and San Polo, the San Pantalon church stands out with its unfinished brick facade, never clad with the facing that was supposed to hide its structure. This exterior sobriety gives no hint of the spectacle awaiting visitors who look up inside, dominated by one of the most spectacular Baroque decorations in Venice.
An Ancient Dedication, a Late Reconstruction
Martyrdom and the Apotheosis
of St Pantalon
Dedicated to Saint Pantaleon, a martyr physician whose cult has been attested in Venice since the Middle Ages, the church is mentioned for the first time in 1161. The current building, however, is the result of a much later reconstruction, carried out by the architect Francesco Comin between 1668 and 1686, notably due to stability problems of the old church.
The construction site profoundly transformed the monument: its axis was rotated by 90 degrees so that the new facade opened directly onto Campo San Pantalon. The interior then adopted a vast single nave flanked by side chapels, while the facade remained in its bare state, with its exposed bricks and its large semicircular opening.
Fumiani's Painted Ceiling
The ceiling was painted by Giovan Antonio Fumiani between 1680 and 1704. It is not a fresco, but an immense oil painting composed of 40 assembled canvases, covering about 443 m². The Martyrdom and Glory of Saint Pantaleon transforms the entire vault into an imaginary architecture populated with angels, saints, and executioners, in a dizzying play of perspectives that seems to extend the real space of the church.
Other Treasures to Discover
Beyond the ceiling, the church preserves several remarkable works, including Saint Pantaleon Healing a Child by Paolo Veronese, painted in 1587 and considered his last work. In the chapel of the Holy Nail is also the Coronation of the Virgin by Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni d'Alemagna, dated 1444, as well as an Annunciation from the 14th century attributed to Paolo Veneziano.
The church also has a reproduction of the Holy House of Loreto set up in 1744, with traces of frescoes by Pietro Longhi, as well as an organ built by Gaetano Callido in 1803. So many elements easily eclipsed by Fumiani's ceiling, but which make San Pantalon a visit much richer than a simple glance at the vault.
