Beyond its great monuments, Torcello preserves the traces of a city that was once far larger. A bridge without parapets, religious ruins, archaeological remains and legends now allow us to gradually reconstruct its vanished appearance.

Vanished Torcello: remains and curiosities of the ancient city

Beyond the great monuments still standing, Torcello preserves many traces that allow us to imagine a medieval city now almost entirely erased. Around the cathedral and along the canal there were once dwellings, quays, warehouses, workshops, churches and monasteries. The Ponte del Diavolo, the remains of San Giovanni Evangelista and of the ancient baptistery, or even the famous “Throne of Attila”, today constitute some of the visible clues of this vanished Torcello.

A city almost invisible beneath the landscape

Archaeological research has considerably refined the image of ancient Torcello. The excavations have notably brought to light wooden houses, quays, hearths and craft installations from the 8th and 9th centuries, as well as older warehouses dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries. Amphorae used for transporting wine and oil, ceramics and cooking vessels bear witness to a large population and significant commercial activity.

The inhabitants even tried to gain space on the waters: an ancient canal separating the cathedral district from the inhabited area was gradually consolidated with hundreds of piles in order to extend the usable land. In 2018, archaeologists also discovered a burial dating from around the year 700, a rare piece of direct evidence of the island’s first inhabitants.

San Giovanni Evangelista and the vanished baptistery

Just after the Ponte del Diavolo are the remains of San Giovanni Evangelista, brought to light during excavations carried out in the 1960s. This former Benedictine monastery in particular welcomed women from Venetian patrician families. Suppressed in 1810, under Napoleonic rule, the complex was subsequently demolished.

In front of the cathedral, meanwhile, traces of its ancient baptistery also remain. Now vanished above ground, the structure has been studied archaeologically and has been the subject of a virtual reconstruction. These remains remind us that the current religious ensemble represents only part of the vast ecclesiastical centre that once occupied this area.

The Ponte del Diavolo, a bridge without parapets

Spanning the main canal of Torcello, the Ponte del Diavolo (“Devil’s Bridge”) retains a feature that has become exceptional: it is without a parapet. Venetian bridges were built this way for a long time before side protections became widespread. Together with the Ponte Chiodo in Cannaregio, it is one of the very rare examples of this ancient arrangement still visible today.

The false “Throne of Attila”

Finally, on the small central square, there stands an imposing stone seat known as the Throne of Attila. The King of the Huns, however, has no connection with the object: the Museo di Torcello identifies it as an ancient episcopal chair. Its transformation into a legendary throne illustrates perfectly how, on an island where so many monuments have disappeared, popular tales have sometimes filled the gaps left by history.

Visit: the Ponte del Diavolo is on the path connecting the landing stage to the monumental centre of Torcello. The baptistery and the Throne of Attila are located around the cathedral square, while the remains of San Giovanni Evangelista are situated just after the bridge. Together, they allow Torcello to be explored as a diffuse archaeological site, where the few preserved remains serve as landmarks to reconstruct a much larger city.
