Santa Maria Assunta, at the origins of the Venice lagoon

Founded in 639, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello is among the oldest religious buildings in the Venice lagoon. A founding inscription recalls its construction at the time of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and of the exarch of Ravenna Isaac, while Torcello was asserting itself as one of the main settlement centres of the lagoon. The church became the cathedral of the diocese of Torcello, a role it retained for more than a millennium, until the abolition of the diocese at the beginning of the 19th century.

The building was profoundly transformed on several occasions. A major reconstruction is traditionally associated with the year 1008, but research carried out during recent restorations has made it possible to clarify this history: a large part of the basilica's volume seems to have been constituted already in the 9th century, when a larger church absorbed the original 7th-century building. The 11th-century transformations notably prepared the installation of the vast mosaic decoration that today makes Santa Maria Assunta famous.

An austere architecture inherited from the early centuries

Seen from the outside, the basilica strikes more by its simplicity than by its monumentality. Its plan with three naves, separated by marble columns surmounted by capitals, preserves the characteristic organization of early Christian basilicas. Near the facade, the foundations of the San Giovanni baptistery, now vanished, are still visible; it belonged to the same religious complex as Santa Maria Assunta and the neighbouring church of Santa Fosca.

The interior is much richer. In addition to its geometric-patterned mosaic pavement, the basilica preserves a remarkable collection of sculptures and liturgical furnishings of Byzantine inspiration. The old choir screen, with its marble panels carved with plant motifs, lions and facing peacocks, bears witness to the close artistic ties that then united the lagoon with the eastern Adriatic and the Byzantine world.

Paintings hidden for centuries

The mosaics have long overshadowed an even older decoration. During restoration campaigns, exceptional fragments of 9th- and 10th-century frescoes were discovered in the upper parts of the building, hidden since the Middle Ages. Among them are scenes related to the Virgin and Saint Martin, accompanied by painted inscriptions. These remains, considered the oldest pictorial testimonies of this type found in the Venetian area, allow us to imagine the appearance of Santa Maria Assunta before the installation of the mosaics.

The basilica is thus much more than an isolated monument in the middle of an island that is today almost deserted. It recalls that before the rise of Rialto and Venice, Torcello had its own bishop, its institutions and an important urban centre. The dimensions of the church, its decoration and its religious complex contrast today strikingly with the meadows and wetlands that surround the ancient city square.

Visit: access to the basilica is paid. The campanile is visited separately and a combined ticket for the basilica and the campanile is offered. From its top, when access is open, the view encompasses Torcello and a large part of the northern lagoon.
