The Zitelle, between charity and architecture

Officially dedicated to Santa Maria della Presentazione, the church known as the Zitelle belongs to a vast charitable complex founded in 1561, notably under the impetus of the Jesuit Benedetto Palmio. The institution housed young girls from poor families, considered particularly exposed to the risk of prostitution. There they received a religious and practical education, learning in particular sewing, embroidery, and lacemaking in order to be able to work or, when possible, to marry with a dowry.

The first residents were welcomed as early as 1561, but the present church was built later: its foundation stone was laid in 1581, and it was consecrated in 1588. Set between the wings of the former hospice, it stands out from the St. Mark’s Basin with its classical façade, its large round-arched window, its dome, and its two small bell towers.

The interior preserves several works linked to the history of the institution. The high altar altarpiece, the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, was made around 1586; its attribution itself was debated between Leandro and Francesco Bassano. Its subject directly echoed the vocation of the church and offered the young residents the figure of Mary as a model of virtue.

With the Redentore to the west and San Giorgio Maggiore on the other side of the water, the Zitelle participate in the remarkable architectural staging of the St. Mark’s Basin. Their façade marks the eastern end of the Giudecca and remains particularly visible from the St. Mark’s Pier and the Zattere.

Visit : the church does not have daily opening hours as regular as the main Venetian monuments. Access may be possible during occasional openings, events, or by reservation; it is therefore advisable to check visiting possibilities before going there.
