Sant’Eufemia, an ancient Veneto-Byzantine church of the Giudecca

Founded according to tradition in 865, under the dogate of Orso I Participazio, the church of Sant’Eufemia is the oldest church on the Giudecca and among the oldest in Venice. Dedicated to Saint Euphemia and to the martyrs Dorothy, Thecla, and Erasma, it retains, despite numerous renovations, part of its Veneto-Byzantine character, notably its basilica plan with three naves, its ancient columns, and their capitals.

The building was thoroughly restored in the 14th century, with the introduction of Gothic elements, then transformed again in the 18th century. This last campaign gave it much of its current interior decor, with stuccoes and paintings that contrast with the much older structure of the church. The long open portico overlooking the Giudecca Canal is one of its most characteristic features; several of its columns come from the former neighboring church of Santi Biagio e Cataldo, now disappeared.

The church also stands out for its position, directly on the canal bank, on the Fondamenta Sant’Eufemia. It belongs to a face of the Giudecca very different from the later grand architectures of the Redentore or the Molino Stucky: that of an island inhabited and structured well before the grand developments of the modern era. Still a parish church, Sant’Eufemia remains today a living place of worship as well as a witness to the medieval origins of the Giudecca.
