Women's Prison Garden Market Market
On Thursday mornings, outside the women's prison on the Giudecca, organic vegetables and aromatic plants grown by the inmates in the prison garden are sold.
Every Thursday morning, outside the women's prison on the Giudecca, Fondamenta delle Convertite, a small stall sells organic vegetables and aromatic and medicinal plants grown in the garden of the institution. The prison occupies a former convent, and its kitchen garden, the Orto delle Meraviglie (“garden of wonders”), covers about 6,400 m² behind its walls.
The garden is cultivated by female inmates as part of a reintegration project run by the social cooperative Rio Terà dei Pensieri, which also handles sales. It is not a market in the usual sense, but a direct sale with limited production: products go quickly, so it is better to come early.
