The wooden bridge to Mazzorbo

A long wooden footbridge, called Ponte Longo, connects the north of Burano to the neighboring island of Mazzorbo. About 60 meters long, the bridge crosses the San Giacomo canal between the fondamenta dei Squeri, on the Burano side, and the fondamenta Santa Caterina. A few minutes are thus enough to go from one island to the other without taking the vaporetto again.

The change in atmosphere is immediate. The colorful facades, shops, and lively alleys of Burano give way to more spaced-out houses, gardens, vegetable gardens, and vineyards. Mazzorbo remains inhabited, but its more open landscape better preserves the rural character of the northern lagoon.

The island has also revived an ancient winemaking tradition. In a walled vineyard, the Dorona di Venezia is grown, an indigenous grape variety that almost disappeared after the acqua alta of 1966. Replanted at the beginning of the 21st century, it is notably used to produce Venissa, whose first vintage was presented in 2010.

The crossing can therefore be more than a simple detour: it naturally extends the visit from Burano to a much less frequented island. A short walk allows you to reach the crops, the vineyard, Santa Caterina, and the old campanile, while discovering a decidedly more tranquil side of the lagoon.
