The Palace of the Podestà, Memory of Malamocco

Facing the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palace of the Podestà of Malamocco, also known as Palazzo Pretorio or Palazzo Persico, is one of the main civic landmarks of the old town. This late Gothic building recalls that Malamocco long retained its own administrative organization, several centuries after the center of ducal power moved to Rialto.

The locality was in fact governed by a podestà, a representative of Venetian authority, until the fall of the Republic in 1797. Malamocco then became a comune before being definitively annexed to Venice in 1883. The palace itself served as a municipal seat, thus extending its public function well beyond the era of the Serenissima.

Its façade remains relatively sober, but several carved stone elements, notably coats of arms, plaques and a relief depicting the winged lion of Saint Mark, recall its former official function. The whole contrasts with the great aristocratic palaces of central Venice: here, the architecture is that of a small lagoon center provided with its own institutions.

The building still retains a public function today. The ground floor houses offices, while the piano nobile notably includes the room used for civil weddings and spaces intended for exhibitions. A major restoration completed in 2022 concerned the roof, woodwork, stone decorations and several interior fittings.

Visit: the interior spaces do not function as a museum open permanently. Access and exhibition possibilities may vary; it is best to inquire locally before planning a specific visit.
