Lido Beaches Attraction

The historic beaches of Venice, lined with bathing establishments and colorful beach huts.

Lido Beaches, Venice's seaside façade

Stretching along the Adriatic for a good portion of the approximately 12 kilometers of the Lido di Venezia, the beaches are the true seaside facade of Venice. Fine sand, bathing establishments, long rows of beach huts, and open sea make up a landscape unlike that of the canals, while the historic center remains just a few minutes away by vaporetto.

The Lido's seaside vocation took hold in the 19th century: a first bathing establishment opened as early as 1857, then hotels, villas, and leisure facilities gradually transformed the island. By the end of the century, the Lido had become one of the most renowned seaside resorts in Europe, frequented by an international clientele. The large beach huts, the capanne, sometimes equipped with a veranda and used throughout the season by the same families, remain one of the distinctive signs of this Venetian beach culture.

The coastline today offers quite different experiences. Around the Lungomare and the central part of the Lido, there are several paid bathing establishments, with sun loungers, umbrellas, cabins, and services. Other areas remain freely accessible, particularly along the Murazzi, toward San Nicolò, and especially at the Alberoni, at the southern end of the island.

The Alberoni deserve a special mention: behind their beach lies one of the best-preserved dune systems in the northern Adriatic, part of the European Natura 2000 network. The area thus offers a much more natural atmosphere than the developed beaches of central Lido, with dunes, pine forest, and protected areas.

Visit: free access in the free beach areas; paid bathing establishments with rental of sun loungers, umbrellas, or cabins depending on the site and season. For a classic beach day, the central part is the most practical; for a wilder and quieter atmosphere, the Alberoni are generally more interesting.
