Festa della Salute Event Religious event
Every 21 November, a bridge of boats spans the Grand Canal to the basilica of the Salute: Venetians come to give thanks to the Virgin for the end of the plague of 1630-1631.
The Festa della Salute, Venice gives thanks to the Virgin
Every year on 21 November, Venice celebrates one of its most heartfelt and faithfully observed festivals: the Festa della Madonna della Salute. It commemorates a vow made by the Republic in the midst of tragedy: in 1630 and 1631, a plague epidemic killed some 47,000 people in Venice, almost a third of its population. In November 1630, the Senate, under Doge Nicolò Contarini, solemnly vowed to build a great church to the Virgin if the city were delivered from the scourge. A general procession lasting three days and three nights was held; the epidemic receded the following year, and Venice kept its promise.
The construction of the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute was entrusted to the architect Baldassare Longhena, then barely thirty years old. Work began in 1631 at the Punta della Dogana and lasted more than half a century; the church was only consecrated in 1687, long after its architect's death. Since 1631, without interruption, Venetians have returned every 21 November to give thanks to the one they regard as the protector of the city's public health.
On the day of the festival, a dense crowd crosses the bridge, candle in hand, to enter the basilica and pray before the icon of the Madonna della Salute, before leaving by another door. This simple gesture - crossing the water on foot, lighting a candle - has kept alive for almost four centuries the collective memory of the epidemic and of the city's deliverance.
The festival also has its ritual dish: castradina, a stew of salted and smoked mutton cooked with cabbage and onions. This preserved meat recalls the role of the Dalmatian merchants who, during the isolation imposed by the plague, were the only ones able to supply Venice with dried meat - a culinary tribute still very much alive, served in families and trattorias on that day.
Good to know: unlike Carnival or the Festa della Sensa, the date of 21 November is fixed, whatever the day of the week. The bridge of boats usually stays in place for a few days around the date; the biggest crowds are in the late morning and early afternoon on the 21st. Expect cool and often rainy weather, typical of Venice in November.
