The Venice Marathon (Venicemarathon)
The Venice Marathon, or Venicemarathon, is usually run on a Sunday in October. It connects Stra, on the Riviera del Brenta, to Venice, over 42.195 km. The race passes through the villas of the Brenta, Mestre and San Giuliano Park, then crosses the Ponte della Libertà to enter the historic city. Two shorter races, a 10 km and a half marathon, start from San Giuliano Park in Mestre and also finish in Venice.
The end of the route is the most spectacular: runners follow the Zattere to the Punta della Dogana, cross the Grand Canal on a temporary floating bridge, go through St Mark's Square and finish on the Riva dei Sette Martiri. The final kilometres include several bridges equipped with wooden ramps.
Things to plan for: on race day, expect traffic and transport disruptions in both Mestre and Venice, particularly at the Zattere and around St Mark's.
