New Year's Eve is traditionally celebrated in Venice in a festive, popular atmosphere, with a massive gathering in Piazza San Marco (tens of thousands of people in some years) to the sound of bells and live music.
As with Carnival, hotels are fully booked well in advance for this night, and many restaurants offer special New Year's Eve menus by reservation.
Be prepared: come early to find a good spot along the quays, dress warmly (winter night outdoors).
